Phin Coffee and Phin Filter – Preparation Guide
Phin Coffee – How to Brew Vietnamese Coffee with a Phin Filter
A phin is a Vietnamese metal coffee filter used to brew a rich cup of coffee by slow dripping. It is one of the most well-known methods of brewing coffee in Vietnamese coffee culture.
What is a phin?
A phin typically consists of a filter chamber, a lid, and a heavy filter plate. Coffee grounds are placed in the phin, and hot water is added on top. The coffee gradually drips into the cup without a paper filter.
How to brew coffee with a phin
- Add approximately 15–20 g of medium-coarse coffee grounds to the phin.
- Moisten the coffee with a small amount of hot water and let it bloom for about 20–30 seconds.
- Slowly add the rest of the water.
- Let the coffee drip peacefully for a few minutes.
- Enjoy black, with ice, or with condensed milk.
What coffee is suitable for a phin?
A phin works particularly well with rich Vietnamese coffees. Robusta Premium provides a strong body, Arabica brings aroma, Culi offers a particularly intense coffee experience, and Saigon Blend is a balanced option.
Phin Coffee for Beginners
If you haven't brewed coffee with a phin before, the easiest way to start is with a starter kit, which includes a phin and suitable coffee.
